Diyan Achjadi's prints and animations deploy a pop-cartoon aesthetic to examine the ways that militarism, violence, and natural disasters are depicted in popular media. She has exhibited across Canada and the US, most recently at Centre Mai (Montreal 2009), Oboro (Montreal, 2010), Centre A (Vancouver,2010), and the Mendel Gallery (Saskatoon, 2010).  Achjadi received a BFA from the Cooper Union (New York, NY, 1993) and an MFA from Concordia University (Montreal, QC, 2002).  Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, she currently lives in Vancouver and teaches print media in the Faculty of Visual Arts and Material Practice at Emily Carr University.

Diyan Achjadi is a Vancouver-based artist who explores the ways that surface ornamentation and illustrated printed matter can function as archives documenting the circulation of ideas in visual form. Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, her formative years were spent moving between multiple educational, political, and cultural systems. Achjadi is a Professor in the Audain Faculty of Art at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

Diyan Achjadi’s practice considers surface ornamentation, historical prints and illustrations as pictorial archives, and the potential of these forms as sites for knowledge transmission. Her formative years were spent negotiating different educational, political and cultural systems, leading to an ongoing interest in how our understanding of ideologies is influenced and informed by the visual popular culture that surrounds us. Much of Achjadi’s work examines the (mis)representations, (mis)translations and imaginings of Indonesia, her country of birth. Achjadi received an MFA from Concordia University, Montreal, and a BFA from the Cooper Union, New York. She has exhibited widely at galleries and film festivals across Canada and beyond.
